each summer

Each summer, the people of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church challenge themselves to read scripture every day. This summer, we're focusing on people. We've picked 55 Biblical characters we find interesting. Some are familiar. Some are obscure. They all show how God works through ordinary, imperfect people. Different members of the congregation will blog. Check back here daily for the person of the day, starting June 6th.

Abraham/Abram - Genesis 15, 17, 22; Romans 4:1-5,9-25

Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld

Welcome to the Summer of Scripture, 2011. We start "what's their story" with Abraham. It is through him and his wife Sarah (more on her tomorrow) that God created the people of Israel. Maybe you know the classic camp song, "Father Abraham": "Father Abraham had many kids, many kids had father Abraham. And I am one of them. And so are you. So let's all praise the Lord."

That song is the retelling of a miracle. Abram and his wife Sarai were childless. Abram was faithful to God and in return, God said that Abram's reward would be very great. He begged God for an heir. God promised great blessings in the form of descendents to Abram and Sarai, who was beyond childbearing years. God changed their names to Abraham and Sarah in the process.
" Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them." The the Lord said to him, 'So shall your descendants be." And he believed the Lord and the Lord reckoned it to him as righteousness."
Abraham believed God. But it didn't happen right away. There was a gap in time between this promise and the fulfillment. Abraham kept on believing God. His faithfulness to God is a model for all of us to trust God even when the evidence is thin or the timing is slow. We are all Abraham's descendents, if not genetically, than through the bonds of faith.

Father Abraham had many kids - and I am one of them. And so are you. So let's all praise the Lord!
